The Best Hiking Boot The St. Elias wins our Preppers Choice award as the best hiking boot of the bunch. What makes this boot the perfect modern upgrade of the backpacking boot? First, the modern part. This model is designed and built with economy of weight in mind. Lightweight EVA cushioning pads in the midsole and synthetic materials in the collar complement traditional full grain leather and Vibram rubber soles. The result is a boot with minimized weight that is unparalleled in comfort. Second, the backpacking boot part. The St. Elias is stable and supportive, durable, and water resistant. Most boots make more compromises in these areas for weight savings than Vasque does with the St. Elias GTX. These qualities are what for decades defined a good boot, and the ones that set our Editors' Choice winner apart. The Best Cold Weather Boot
The Bugaboot’s heavy insulation makes the boot warmer and more comfortable than other boots. It can also fit a wider range of feet than other brands, and its stiff construction makes cold-weather walking more stable than in soft-sided boots. And if you live in colder climates or spend a lot of time trekking through deep snow in the great outdoors, it’s available in an XTM version with more insulation for both men and women. The Best Camping Stove
We took nine of the top camping stoves and put them in side-by-side tests in both our lab and campgrounds across the Western US. We looked for which stove was best for small groups as well as families. We found a number of surprises: the BTU rating alone does not tell you how fast it boils water, the simmering ability of stoves varies widely, and its not just price that determines quality. Our Preppers choice has Powerful burners, generous cooking area for a compact stove and good flame control. Best Flashlight
The Streamlight Stinger DS C4 LED Flashlight features an innovative dual-switch system that offers professionals across a variety of industries additional flexibility, especially in low-light situations. This flashlight gives you the power you need, to use one light for virtually any job to major operations such as lighting an accident, fire scene, or tactical deployments. The Streamlight Stinger DS LED Flash Light gives professionals such as the police, first responders, industrial workers and auto repair technicians the ability to choose between two fully independent switches, located at the tail-cap and at the light head. The Streamlight Stinger DS LED Light gives you full control over the flashlight's three microprocessor-controlled variable light levels and strobe function from each of the two fully independent switches located on the light head and tailcap. The shockproof, three-watt, super-high flux LED generates up to 80 Lumens of light, and Streamlight's proprietary deep-dish parabolic reflector focuses the LED's output into an powerful long-range beam combined with ample side illumination. Best Multipurpose Tool
One of the best survival items you can get is a multi-tool – and it’s a Leatherman. It gives you knives, scissors, pliers, screwdrivers, and a saw in one little pouch. If you could only have one item with you in a survival situation, I’d be hard-pressed to think of anything better to have. Best Radio for Coms

Best Cold Weather Parka The Canada Goose Expedition Parka is our Preppers Choice Award winner for winter down jackets. Lots of factors combine to make this an all around fantastic winter jacket: With box-baffle construction and burly materials - this parka is very warm and equipped with well thought-out and smartly designed features. This jacket performed extremely well in severe winter condition. This is hands down the best Parka we have seen but it is pricey.
Best Budget Parka
The N-3B Parka was developed by the military for flight crews to use in extreme cold weather and is mainly issued to crews assigned to troop transports, bombers and helicopters. This giant water-repellent snorkel parka will keep you far warmer than a short jacket, whether you're flying or have your feet firmly planted on the ground. When the cold wind blows, you'll be glad to have the drawstring hood and its synthetic fur trim. The parka features four front pockets plus sleeve pockets. Not much else to say but it's good and it's CHEAP Best Bug Out Pack
The Preppers Choice winner by a good margin is the Arc'teryx Altra 65. It's over-all performance was spectacular. The Altra 65 was among the most comfortable packs we tested even with heavier(60lbs) loads, yet was surprisingly lightweight considering its frame and number of features. We loved the comfort and support the pivoting waist belt provided as well as the nicely articulated shoulder straps which where all among the bets in our review. The Altra has excellent access with the perfect sized and useable pocket. Really it's the ultimate multi-day backpacking pack, the only bummer……the price. Something we questioned was the Altra's durability, the fabric just doesn't feel as tough as several other packs we tested, but after literally over 100 days of relatively hard use, we have no evidence to back up this hypothesis of a lack of durability and ours is still going strong. I would recommend getting it in black. Best Budget Bug Out Pack
The good ol military Alice pack. This is a great pack for Bug Out Gear and if it's good enough for the military I think it will work fine for buggen out. These packs are rugged and can support a heavy load while offering a fair amount of comfort. you can usually find them with the frame for about $50 - $75 Make sure you get the frame as many are sold separately and you do not want this thing on your back without the frame. Best Budget Night Vision
This is a fantastic product for price! ergonomics are perfect and device performs far better than expected. directions for use are concise and easy. The lightweight Viking Pro 2x24 includes a built-in IR unit for added clarity and is useful for numerous applications. Yukon Advanced Optics' engineers kept versatility and comfort in mind when creating the Viking series of night vision binoculars.
